What to pack when moving to The Netherlands

'Two checked bags, a carry-on, and a cat. Good luck.'  This was rolling through my brain like intro credits to a movie as I went through my four-season wardrobe. I visited the Netherlands in March earlier that year (2022). Then, the weather reflected a perfect spring. Chilly in the morning until a warm afternoon sun greeted you and drew you to a terrace for an afternoon borrel. The blissful spring sunshine only added to the allure of this little country. Flash forward one year and the Netherlands entered their wettest year on record. Like, in the history of recording rainfall. Nice. Let me also remind you that this country has more bikes than people. So, what clothes are you packing to battle all the weather elements on any given day on a bike? Jackets. The answer is bring all the jackets. This is a jacket country. Layers are your best friend.

So what do you actually need to move to the Netherlands? Here’s my list of necessities.

#1 Layers. The Dutch weather is known for its unpredictability. Bring layers to adapt to the seasonality of spring/summer/fall/winter. A warm down jacket during winter is a must. As the seasons change the jackets do not. I am always shocked at how many people I see wearing their winter coats well into the spring. Dressing for “summer” in the Netherlands is, for the most part, an extended spring. You may get a few warmer days but expect the temperature to stay around 15-18℃ about 60-70℉ for my folks in the U.S.

#2 Rainproof your wardrobe. A good waterproof jacket and pair of shoes will save you from feeling soggy and cold all day. If you are biking to work I recommend getting a pair of rainproof pants to go over your clothes as well.

#3 Basics. Packing versatile basics will allow more flexibility in your wardrobe and space in your luggage. A good pair of jeans and some classic black or white tees are a great jumping off point. Add in some sweaters for layering and a few blouses or button ups and you will be set. Neutral colors are great for this, and they also help you blend in with the stylish Dutch locals. No more going to the store in your pajamas or workout clothes.

#4 Footware. When deciding what shoes to pack I would suggest more close-toed shoes than sandals. A good pair of waterproof boots or shoes is a great investment if you don’t have a pair already.

#5 Style it up. Depending on your lifestyle and line of work, having a set of formal wear is a good idea. A nice blouse or shirt and a versatile blazer should cover most occasions. Dressing up your wardrobe will also help you blend in more with the Dutch. They are quite the stylish country. Unlike the typical American, you won’t see many Dutchies wearing athleisure out and about.

A few final thoughts on packing for a move to the Netherlands. The weather is shifty here, so jackets are key to a comfortable day in the Netherlands. Remember the houses here are much smaller than your typical American home. Think tall and skinny. Even as a last resort I don’t think you could fit your current jeans collection in the oven. ;) Lastly, the key is to be practical while expressing your personal style.

If you have other questions, leave a comment! I would be happy to answer your questions about packing for a move abroad.

Happy Packing!
